Mountain Man, Scott Sorenson visited the fourth-grade students of Canyon Elementary Friday, Jan. 27, 2012. This was a great experience for our students. They loved hearing about famous mountain men, learning more about what a mountain man does, asking questions, and actually getting to touch real animal pelts.

Fifth-grade students from Canyon Elementary displayed their science projects at their annual Science Fair held at the school Jan. 26, 2012. Students formed a hypothesis for their science projects and then set up their own experimental trials to prove or disprove their hypothesis. They kept a journal of their work and finally put together a display showing the results. Some students worked with a team and others did individual projects. The winners will now go on to the district science fair.
Third-grade students at Canyon Elementary celebrated their annual gingerbread house making tradition on Dec. 20, 2011. Parents donated candies and icing for the students to use. All of the third-grade students met in the cafeteria with teachers and parent helpers to assemble and decorate their gingerbread houses.

Fifth-grade students from Canyon Elementary had their annual "States Fair" Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011. Each student researched a state in the United States and then they created a display of information and facts to tell about that state. Students and parents walked through the gym looking at all of the states on display.

Students from Canyon Elementary and East Meadows have been participating in early morning orchestra for the past two months. Cheryl Wangsgard is the orchestra teacher. Mr. Harlan, Canyon Principal, was giving a presentation about Canyon Elementary to the School Board November 9, 2011, and he invited the orchestra students to perform a couple of numbers during the presentation. The orchestra did an amazing job and received compliments from members of the School Board.
All students in grades K-6 at Canyon Elementary participate in the Ken Garff Road to Success reading program. If students meet their class reading goal each month, they earn entry slips that they can put in containers by the office for a chance to win a bike. Friday, Nov. 4, 2011, Principal, Mr. Dave Harlan, pulled two names from the entry containers. Jada Bunnell and Tayxa Talbot both won bikes to pick up from the Springville Wal Mart store.

Students and teachers alike enjoyed dressing up for Halloween at Canyon Elementary. All grades K-6 had fun showing off their costumes as they paraded through the halls for parents.

Zak Flinders, fifth-grade student from Canyon Elementary, entered UDOT's contest "Walk More in 4". UDOTwanted to encourage students to walk or bike to school therefore putting less cars on the roads. During the month of September, students kept track of all the days they walked or rode their bikes to and from school. If you conformed 75% of the time, you were eligible for a drawing for a bike or scooter. UDOT received over 4,000 entries. They gave out 30 bikes and scooters. Third-grade students at Canyon Elementary each read a favorite book and then wrote a book report. As a final activity, they decorated a pumpkin as one of the main characters from the book they read. Students brought their decorated pumpkin story characters to school to share with their classmates.
