Canyon Elementary had its annual fifth grade science fair Thursday, January 20, 2011.  The following students will move on to the District Science Fair to represent Canyon Elementary on February, 23, 2011.

   Students at Canyon Elementary participate in the Ken Garff road to Success reading program.  Students record each night that they read at home on their reading goal charts.  When they meet their goal, their teachers give them entry slips to write their names on to put in a container for a school wide drawing.  Friday, Dec. 17th, our principal, Mr.

     First grade students in Miss Hutching's class have been sharing Christmas traditions.  Miriam Pendleton and her mother, Mrs. Becky Pendleton, shared their Christmas tradition of making peppermint candy.  Mrs.

     Canyon Elementary students recognize that many families need extra help this time of year.  So student council members from Canyon organized a Food Drive at the school.  All classes were invited to participate.  Their goal this year was to collect 2100 food items to donate to the local food bank.  They surpassed their goal in collecting 2105 items.

     Sixth grade students at Canyon Elementary have the opportunity to be peer reading tutors to younger students.  Once selected, they are trained to be reading tutors.  They meet with second grade students every morning before school for several weeks and tutor them in reading.  Lots of books are read and lots of new friendships are made, too.

     Second grade students at Canyon Elementary celebrated Thanskgiving with Pilgrim and Indian Days.  Students learned more about the first Thanksgiving by rotating through different stations set up in their classrooms.  Each station had a differrent activity for the students to participate in such as making Indian headresses, beaded necklaces, childrens' games and food.  Teachers and parent helpers enjoyed helping students complete the activities at each station.

     Fifth grade students at Canyon Elementary had their annual States Fair Friday, November 19, 2010.  The students got to draw out of a hat the name of a state to do their rerport on.  They each worked in class to create a 15 page report about their state.  As a culminating activity, they got to make a presentation about their state and students and parents were invited to tour the States Fair in the school auditorium.

Canyon faculty and staff also had fun dressing up for Halloween along with the students.  Fourth grade teachers came as The Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs.
