Canyon Student Wins UDOT Contest

     Zak Flinders, fifth-grade student from Canyon Elementary, entered UDOT's contest "Walk More in 4".  UDOTwanted to encourage students to walk or bike to school therefore putting less cars on the roads.  During the month of September, students kept track of all the days they walked or rode their bikes to and from school.  If you conformed 75% of the time, you were eligible for a drawing for a bike or scooter.  UDOT received over 4,000 entries.  They gave out 30 bikes and scooters.  Zak was surprised to find out that he was a winner of a n

Pumpkin Story Characters

   Third-grade students at Canyon Elementary each read a favorite book and then wrote a book report.  As a final activity, they decorated a pumpkin as one of the main characters from the book they read.  Students brought their decorated pumpkin story characters to school to share with their classmates.

Canyon Red Ribbon Week

   Canyon PTA volunteers along with student council members sponsored Red Ribbon Week for Canyon Elementary October 24-27, 2011.  During Red Ribbon Week, students pledge to be drug free and say "no" to drugs.  Every day has a different theme.  Monday everyone received a red wristband to wear all week.  Tuesday they will have a great assembly.  Wednesday everyone will wear red and Thursday students will create the school's longest red paper chain.

Author Visits Canyon

     Author, Tyler Whitesides, visited Canyon Elementary telling third through sixth-grade students about his new book, Janitors.  It's a magical story about a secret society of wizard-like janitors.  Mr. Whitesides also told the students that everyone has the ability to do extraordinary things.  Mr. Whitesides told the boys and girls that they can all be authors.  Students can take information from reading and their everyday experiences and turn them into great stories.

 

Canyon Carnival

   Canyon Elementary PTA sponsored a family night carnival Monday, October 3, 2011.  Students and their families came back to school that evening to enjoy games, rides and great food.  There was also a slient auction to bid on doanted baskets.  This fundraiser was a great success bringing in over $7,000.

Canyon 4th Grade Has Map Walk

   Students from Canyon Elementary participated in the annual Fourth-Grade Map Walk.  After learning about Utah's mountains, lakes, rivers, and deserts, students created their own map of Utah out of cakes, play dough, wood, flowers, fabric, puzzles, and so much more.  These maps were proudly displayed for teachers, parents, and other students.

Canyon Elects Student Council

     Canyon sixth-grade students got to apply for student council.  Twenty were selected from the application process.  Those students made posters about themselves asking students to vote for them and the posters were displayed in the lunchroom.  In an assembly, they also got to tell an audience of fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade students why they should vote for them.  After the votes were counted, the new student council was announced at school.  The new 2011-2012 student council members from Canyon Elementary are:  Emily Pope, Kennedy Pay

Mr. Harlan and Gimley

   Mrs. Money's kindergarten students invited Mr. Harlan to bring his dog, Gimley, for show-n-tell.   Mr. Harlan told the students that Gimley's favorite doggie treat is cheese and that his daughters used cheese to train Gimley to do tricks.  The boys and girls loved watching Gimley roll over, shake hands and bark 3 times.

Canyon 9/11 Flag Ceremony

     Canyon Elementary's student body met outside by the flag pole Friday, Sept. 9, for a flag ceremony in remembrance of 9/11.  Cub Scouts presented the flag and students recited the Pledge of Allegiance.  Then everyone sang The Star Spangled Banner and I'm Proud To Be An American.
