Canyon Students Share Christmas Traditions

Submitted by calleen.argyle on Mon, 12/13/2010 - 14:14

First grade students in Miss Hutching's class have been sharing Christmas traditions.  Miriam Pendleton and her mother, Mrs. Becky Pendleton, shared their Christmas tradition of making peppermint candy.  Mrs. Pendleton showed the class how she melts the white chocolate in the microwave and crushes the candy canes in her blender.  Then she mixed the two together and poured the mixture onto a cookie sheet to cool before breaking into pieces.  She had some candy that was already cool and a recipe card that she gave to each of the students in the class.

Canyon Has Food Drive

Submitted by calleen.argyle on Mon, 12/13/2010 - 09:46

Canyon Elementary students recognize that many families need extra help this time of year.  So student council members from Canyon organized a Food Drive at the school.  All classes were invited to participate.  Their goal this year was to collect 2100 food items to donate to the local food bank.  They surpassed their goal in collecting 2105 items.

Canyon Peer Tutoring

Submitted by calleen.argyle on Fri, 12/10/2010 - 11:58

Sixth grade students at Canyon Elementary have the opportunity to be peer reading tutors to younger students.  Once selected, they are trained to be reading tutors.  They meet with second grade students every morning before school for several weeks and tutor them in reading.  Lots of books are read and lots of new friendships are made, too.
