Chemical Reactions

Submitted by kalani.reed on

Mr. Harlan visited Mrs. Murphy's classroom and taught the children about chemical reactions in a fun and exciting way. He used Mrs. Murphy's fingerprint to test if "ghosts" were in the room, he combined two different chemicals together that caused an explosion, and he even made pumpkin boogers (slime). We all had a wonderful time learning about the different reactions.

Ice Cream

Submitted by kalani.reed on

Smooth, cold and creamy. It’s ice cream! You can make ice cream at home. Making ice cream is also a science experiment. All you need is half and half, sugar, and vanilla in a small bag. Once you shake it, it's a chemical change because you can’t just take the sugar out. It is dissolved! Next you need ice and rock salt. The rock salt makes the ice colder. You put the ice and salt in a bag and put the smaller bag inside. Next, you shake and pretty soon it turns into ice cream. This is a physical change because you could turn the ice cream back into a liquid by leaving it out.

BYU athletes talked with the students about having positive role models, never giving up, and setting goals. The sixth graders participated in activities led by BYU athletes. Before attending, sixth graders wrote essays on what being a hero means. Ryker Woods won the essay contest for Canyon! It was a day well spent.
