After 24 years in the district (and 18 years at Canyon, since it opened), Mrs. Higginson is retiring at the end of this year!

Mrs. Higginson always brings a smile to everyone's face, whether it be the students, parents or teachers. She has made Canyon Elementary an awesome place to be!

Congratulations to Ashlyn Alger for winning the Canyon 2014 Spelling Bee!

Each class had previously had their own spelling bee and chose the top 8 spellers. Yesterday the top 8 from each class competed in front of the entire 5th grade and their parents to try to win!

Some of the words the students had to spell were: gregarious, knowledge, carousel,  genre, resevoir, inconsistent, artifical, mediocre, and persuasion.

The winning word for the entire competition was turquoise!

Great job students!

6th grade Orchestra

Submitted by andria.lewis on

Did you know that some 6th graders have been coming to school at 7:15am 2-3 times per week? Why, you might ask?? For Orchestra of course! These dedicated students worked hard all year and had their final performance this morning.

Our music teacher, Mrs. Wangsgard, did a great job with the students and they had some fun songs to perform for the 5th and 6th graders and their parents. Some students also performed their recorders that they've been practicing in music class and at home.

Animals Visit Preschool

Submitted by andria.lewis on

The preschool classes at Canyon got a fun surprise last week when the Bean Museum came to their classroom and helped them learn about (and touch) lots of different animals!

The students took turns picking clues about each animal, and then Mr. Josh pulled out the live animals for them to see and touch!

The kids had a great time learning some fun facts about spiders, snakes, turtles and lizards. The kids' reactions to the animals were priceless; it was a day of school they won't forget!
