Dr. Seuss Week Celebrations

Submitted by jeanette.maughan on

Leaping, reading, pretending and having fun were all part of Canyon Elementary's celebration in honor of Dr. Seuss and Literacy.  Monday was "Leap Day", so we "Leaped into Literacy" by wearing green and participating in Musical Lilypads!  We wore crazy socks in honor of the Dr. Seuss Book "Fox in Socks" and another day was dress like a Dr. Seuss character.  A favorite tradition at Canyon Elementary is Parent's and Pastries.  Parents and students lined our halls before school started eating donuts and reading together.  The week culminated with a readathon.

Chess Champion

Beckett proves that you don't have to be big, to be a Chess Champion.  Beckett competed in the Nebo School District Chess Tournament and came out a winner.  I've been told that this is not even his first time.  Congratulations Beckett!

Orchestra and Band Visit Canyon

Submitted by jeanette.maughan on

You know that spring is right around the corner when.....not the groundhog.....but the Jr. High Orchestra and Bands visit Canyon Elementary.  Their purpose is twofold; to perform and to recruit.  Both assemblies were very well done.  It will be a hard decision that our sixth grade students will have to make.

Fourth Grade Rendezvous and Bartering Bash

Submitted by jeanette.maughan on

The rendezvous was a great. In Miss Hamblin’s class we did a long jump, a hunting game, and a strength pulling game. In Mrs. Perkins’ class we had fry bread with honey and homemade root beer that was clear. We also did a ring toss it was really hard. In Mrs. Cook’s class we played a stick game that was fun. We also panned for gold. Before the Bartering Bash we collected beaver pelts.

Box Top Competition

Submitted by jeanette.maughan on

For the box top competition each class brought in box tops for two weeks.  We would count them and cut them right along the line. The box tops give us money for our school.  We won with over 773 box tops. They gave us cookies and slap bracelets.  We were excited to win!

Drums

Submitted by jeanette.maughan on

Our teacher, Miss Hamblin, assigned us to bring ice cream buckets to make (paint) drums out of the buckets. Each fourth grade class brought in 30 or more buckets! We took the buckets to the art room. There were different colors to paint them with, but we had to put dish soap in the paint to get the paint to stay on the plastic.  When they were painted we waited a day for them to dry. We are using the drums in our 4th Grade program in March. Thanks to Mrs. Jex for helping us complete this fun project.

High School Letterman Club visits Canyon

Submitted by jeanette.maughan on

First, we were donating stuffed animals to poor kids who could not afford them just before Christmas.  We were having a contest between all the classes to see who could donate the most stuffed animals.  After Christmas they announced that Mrs. Hamblin´s class won at Canyon Elementary.  So the high school kids came and brought us donuts for a reward.  It was fun to hang out with them, and they were really nice to us.  While we were eating donuts we challenged them to a multiplication game our class made up called Doritos.

Valentines Party in Fourth Grade

Submitted by jeanette.maughan on

For our Valentines party the first thing we did was pass Valentines to everyone in our class. After that we had a party.  At the party one of the games was where you had to suck up a candy heart with a straw. One of the moms was doing a root beer floats and we also had to figure out a scrambled word puzzle. We also did a lot of other fun games like Don’t Eat Pete, Bingo, and Minute to Win It. We'd like to say thanks to the PTA Moms who planned such a fun party!
