Sixth-grade students have been studying the galaxy. One goal in this unit is to help students analyze and understand how far our planets really are from the earth and from the sun. They do this through detail research, rocket sketches, rocket building and launching of the rockets.
Students partner up, imagine, plan and create a rocket sketch and then as a team collaborate, create an actual bottle rocket. Students do some critical thinking through this process which also includes estimating how far they believe their rocket will launch. This is included in their science notebook with even more detail of their rocket including; labels, dates, measurements, psi, temperature, amount of water added, wind speed and direction.
