Canyon's PTA planned fun activities for each day of the week for Teacher Appreciation Week 2013. Monday they brought in a "Sunrise Breakfast' for the teachers and staff. Tuesday all students were asked to wear yellow to show how their lives have been enlightened by the teachers. Wednesday the PTA had free massages all day long for the teachers and staff. Wednesday was also"Administrative Day" where they celebrated the 'super'office staff for the 'heroes' they are. In conjunction with the Jump for Heart program, Canyon Elementary students got to do jump rope activities in their P.E. classes and also participate in a school-wide Jump-a-thon. The Jump-a-thon winners got a certificate to eat at Cafe Rio and they also got new jump ropes. Here are the Jump-a-thon winners:

First-grade students study rocks and soil in their science curriculum. The first-grade teachers invited Mr. Hathaway, former Canyon Custodian, to bring his rock collection to share with their students. Mr. Hathaway showed the boys and girls many rocks that he collected here in Utah. He also told the boys and girls that rocks have many uses. Some rocks can be turned into heat and others are used for cosmetics. At the end of his presentation, he gave each first-grade teacher a fossil kit to keep for their class.
Mrs. Jenna Reid teaches second grade at Canyon Elementary. She grew up as an only child, but inherited a large family when she got married in 2011. Her husband is one of seven, so now she has five sisters, a brother and four adorable nieces and nephews. She graduated from Yucaipa High School in California and went to Brigham Young University. Her favorite food is authentic Mexican food. She loves running and hiking. Her favorite vacation was on a cruise to Mexico with her family. "Sun, sand and my favorite people; nothing beats that."
Dawn Snell teaches first-grade at Canyon Elementary. She is married to Doug Snell and they have four children; three girls, Blaire 27, Brooke 26, Samantha 24, and 1 son, Gus 17. Samantha is married to Kyle and Dawn and Doug have 1 grand-daughter, Anya. Dawn graduated from BYU, "Go Cougars!" She loves Mexican food and peanut M & M's. A favorite vacation was when she and Doug went to San Antonio, Texas. They loved it and the food was awesome! Her favorite quote is, "The expert in anything was once a beginner." March 29, 2013, Canyon kindergarten students held their annual Egg Drop activity. Students make a container for their egg at home that hopefully will protect their egg when it gets dropped off the school roof by principal, Mr. Dave Harlan and custodian, Mr. Blake Ross. Suzette Harreld teaches first-grade at Canyon Elementary. She is married to Don and they are the parents of Jakob, Christian and David, and David is married to Heidi. Suzette and Don also have two grandchildren. Suzette graduated from Utah State University. Her favorite foods are seafood, chocolate and stinky cheeses and breads. Her favorite vacation was to Tuscany, Italy and Ireland. In her spare time, she likes being with her family, reading, cooking, and gardening with her flowers. The things she loves most about working with students at Canyon is laughing and learning.
Friday, March22, 2013, students from the Harvest Jump Rope Team from Saratoga, Springs, came and showed their jump rope skills to kick off the Jump Rope for Heart program. Students from Canyon Elementary will be doing heart healthy jump rope activities in their P.E. classes and can also participate in a school-wide Jump-a-thon.
Our PTA sponsored literacy month for Canyon Elementary students. One of the activities was their annual Parents and Pastries day held March 4, 2013. Parents came before school started with their children to have doughnuts and milk and then to read some of their favorite books together.
